The Hôtel-Dieu Hospital
Erected on this site in 1644, the Hôtel-Dieu has never ceased to provide care for the sick.  First established for missionary purposes, the hospital has constantly evolved according to social changes and the needs of the community.  Today, after more than 350 years of service, the Hôtel-Dieu still pursues its primary mission while devoting more and more resources in the forefront to research in medicine.

Convent and Church
The convent is next to the hospital and stands in the oldest part of the site.  Its ancient cloister, built in 1757 under the French Regim, still retains its long corridors and staircases worn by the passage of time.  The church which can also be visited, was built between 1800 and 1803.  Its sculptures produced from 1829 to 1832 are the works of the renowned French Canadian sculptor Thomas Baillargé.

Medical Technology
This permanent exhibition, displaying the evolution of medical instruments, is dedicated to the nursing accomplishments of the Augustines.  A “medicine chest” of medical technology takes us back to the beginning of medicine in this country.  Shown here are instruments used in the past in fields such as surgery, pharmacy, dentistry, anaesthesia, etc.  The Rouen blue earthenware can be seen alongside medications and potions.  From the pill dispenser to the surgeon’s knife, the visitor enters the familiar world to our predecessors in the medical field.
